First off, Islington. We had a fantastic Sunday night at O2 Academy Islington’s main stage for another massive showcase gig. It was great seeing so many incredible bands and we absolutely loved seeing all you London folk again; we hope all you who came enjoyed it too.
As you may have gathered from all our Twitter accounts we've been writing a buttload of new material over the summer - and we think it’s some of our best music yet - so this gig was our first real opportunity to show you people what we've been working on.
We hope it was worth the hype.
Unfortunately the events team made a bit of a cock-up which led to our set being cut slightly short, which sucks. However, we've been given the opportunity to do another show in recompense, so you’ll have another chance to see us and hear our new music (get excited right about now). We’re close to confirming that so keep an eye out for an announcement fairly soon.
After the gig, inappropriately early the next morning, hungover and feeling the effects of a 4-hour sleep after the after-party in a fancy cocktail bar, we were fighting our way through kamikaze cyclists in Central London to reach Essex for our first EP recording session with the brilliant Arthur Walwin. Powered by a Subway and a gigantic coffee for breakfast, the first day in the studio consisted of me laying down the drum parts for four songs. They’re sounding absolutely monumental (even if I do say so myself), with Arthur’s genius making them sound even better. I’m so endlessly proud and eager for people to hear it already (drum solo EP, anyone? Nope? Ok then.).
We then returned to the studio yesterday to start tracking the rest of the instruments. Sam kicked the day off with recording the phattest bass lines you will ever hear, and after eventually choosing some kickass effects some guitar parts were laid down. It was another crazy busy and productive day and, boy, do we have something to show for it. We head back to the studio in just over two weeks to record more phat bass parts, crunchy guitar parts and all the kick-ass vocal parts. I’m already fangirling over the songs more than is socially acceptable so it’s gonna be a long two weeks before we get to hear them in their entirety. It goes without saying that you should keep an eye out over the coming months for these songs being released, you’re not going to want to miss it!
Speaking of releases, we have some more news. You may recall our first trip to Arthur’s studio in Essex back in June for the long-awaited recording of Wishes. We’ve been toying with the idea of releasing as a single, but eventually decided to save it for the EP. However, put Sunday 19th October in your diaries because we will be releasing a snazzy new lyric video for it up on YouTube. It’s the most mind-blowingly, beautifully heart-wrenching video you will ever see, made by the genius that is Dave Ashby, so don’t miss it! We may also have some other news regarding Wishes in the near future too. Yet another thing to keep an eye out for.
While I'm here, I should remind you of our huuuuuge Oxjam day on Saturday 18th October – our first gig of the day is at the Oobleck in the Custard Factory in Birmingham, followed by the Dog and Doublet in Wolverhampton, and finishing off at an as yet (I'm told) unconfirmed venue in Shrewsbury. These are all on the same day, and we’d love to see some familiar faces at some/all of them, so come on down! It’s for a great cause after all.
I think that is all for now. Awesome gig. New gig news. Lots of recording. More recording soon. Lyric video release. Three Oxjam gigs in one day. Yep, that’s it. I think the general message you can take from this blog is that big things are happening and so you should just keep an eye out for more bits of news in the future. In the meantime, make sure you’re keeping up to date with us on our various internet things - you know the links.
